Retro Appliances

I remember going into my grandfather’s house as a little girl and trying to open door on his big, honkin’ refrigerator. It was so heavy! It was a 1950′s fridge. Big, beefy and smoky, cold vapor always poured out of it when it was opened. It didn’t have a lot of bells & whistles.

Our kitchen looks so small with the big, boxy fridge in it. Last fall, we found a great monitor top fridge for a greater price. It’s been sitting in the barn since then, keeping stuff cold and humming along. It really is so quiet, you wonder if it’s working.

When we moved in, one of the things left by the previous owners was a 1950-ish Tappan gas oven that was left to them by the previous owners. It’s in fine shape and we’ve used in on several occassions. It cooks slower than I’m used to and you won’t get turkey, dressing, yams and rolls in at the same time, but we think it has much more character than the circa 2000 oven we have now.

Now that the floors are done, we’ll be moving the appliances in. It proves to be a fun-filled project….I’ll have the car ready for another emergency room visit, just in case.

Update!

We played the appliance shuffle yesterday. It went relatively well and there were no injuries. Dennis’ friend, Rob, was nice enough to come over and help heft the Tappan up the basement stairs, take the “new” fridge to the barn and the “new” oven into the basement.

I’m sure we’ll freshen up the outside of both appliances at some point, but for now, they are in place and performing their duties admirably.

It’s a windy fall day here. The red and gold fallen leaves are dancing along the streets and in the yards. The trees are bending and swaying. It seems like autumn. I may make a bath of spiced cider today. Even if you don’t like mulled cider, it does make the house smell great.
