As we drove to the grocery store today, we saw two homes that had their Christmas lights hung outside and turned on. The inflatible yard ornaments were blown up and bouncing in the breeze. A house a couple streets over has multiple Christmas trees up and decorated inside.
It seems way too early to me. Lowe’s, Meijer, Linens & Things, Target have all had their in-store Christmas displays for a month. Their Thanksgiving items were available the middle of September and their Halloween candy & costumes were out in August. Holy Hannah, they were offering back to school supplies around the 4th of July.
After putting our tree up too early last year (it was dry and brittle and the needles poked us mercilessly when we tried to take the ornaments off), we are waiting until at at least mid-December to initiate the holiday season.
If we only have Charlie Brown type trees left to choose from, so be it.

Maybe left over from last year? It floors me how many burned up wreaths I see on people’s doors in the middle of July. Talk about lack of motivation.
I myself am thinking about x-mas decorations, but then this year will be our first year to really “do Christmas” (tree etc…)and I’ve always been a sucker for those types of things.
Yes. The blowup lawn blight is enough to make one gag. And new this year? An 8 ft. Santa Claus with a 4 ft. snowglobe that actually blows bits of styrofoam to imitate snow. OH. MY. GOSH. How cheesy can we become? I haven’t seen any Christmas blights yet but they’ll be up soon. I like to put my tree up a week after Thanksgiving. Sorry, it’s just the way I am. This will be the first year of my adult life to get a real tree and I am very excited. I hope it isn’t crispy by the time Christmas rolls around.
We’ve sworn not to put our tree up until mid-December. We’ll see if we stick to that. Last year, we had two trees, I think this year, we’ll just have one. We’re also thinking of cutting our own tree. I’ve never done that, so that would be fun.
I love Christmas. Not the gift getting (and now that we’re home owners, who has the cash anyway), but the general feeling that surrounds the season. I wonder though, if starting the season too soon (like, you know, October) results in losing the essential meaning of the season.
