Gutters done

Got home today just as the gutter guys were packing up to leave. The gutters look nice. As I walked inside, it began to sprinkle, so maybe the roof and gutters will get tested today.

My fear is that I will be creeping up into the attic with a flashlight several times during the night to check for leaks.

I spoke to the office manager tonight. She was calling to see if the gutters were alright. Look nice, I said, can’t say if they work well yet. Then after a small pause, she said “I understand the salesman is coming to your house on Monday (another small, painful pause) to collect the balance.”

Whoa! I’m not sure that’s happening while we have all these outstanding issues, Toots.

Then a longer pause. We were talking cash now. This was getting serious. Cash, money, bread, dough, jack, greenbacks. Oh yeah. At that point, she offered to arrange to have her boss come out to the house to discuss the situation. He’d come out along with the roofing boss. They want us to be happy customers. The roofing boss has worked for them a long time and they have never had any complaints about him. She was sorry that communications at all levels was so poor. She took responsibility for her part in that, she apologized for the roofing boss’ behavior (vis-a-vis his poor communication with us). She wants us to be hap-hap-happy! By this time, I was both bemused and seething. While I was enjoying the tap dance she was performing, I was ticked that they couldn’t have cared less about our satisfaction before the $ card was played.

I just basically kept saying “uh huh” and kept quiet. I had my barrel locked and loaded. I waited. It came…

She mentioned the roofer’s excellent reputation and how no one else had ever complained again.

I cocked and fired.

1. Didn’t want the roofing boss here
2. Wanted her boss to walk to porch roofline and see how springy it was
3. Wanted him to see the gaps and the exposed wood where the roofline meets the house at the porch, the dining room bump-out, the dormers fore and aft. Wanted him to explain to us how that’s an acceptable practice
4. Want him to walk out on the airing deck to see the railing and balusters. Rock it back and forth.
5. Wanted him to…

She stopped me there…”make a list”, she said.
Oh yeah, got that.

We’re good people, neither one of us has ever ducked a bill or welched on a debt. Don’t believe in frivolous lawsuits. Can’t abide a deadbeat. We will certainly pay the balance of the bill, once our issues are resolved to our satisfaction. If we can’t reach an agreement with the company, we’ll talk to the BBB or an attorney.

Personal responsibility is not just for individuals, it’s for companies too.

  • [...] To make a long story short (I know, I know, it’s already a saga), the owner is sending his siding guy out tomorrow to flash and tidy up the areas around the dormers and other miscellaneous areas. Then the roofers (the same guy that initially did the job (darn it!)), will be back to remove three courses of shingles from the porch, remove “plywood” and replace it with 1x. Then reshingle. [...]
