Winterizing

November 28, 2006

Not much exciting to report.? We spent a good deal of time last week cleaning the house for company.? If I was a better housekeeper, it would have been simpler.? However, company is a great motivator to give the house more than a lick and a promise.

Last weekend was outside chores (for Dennis anyway).? The winter is coming and the leaves need to be cleaned up and we need to get the roses ready to be coned.

Several months ago, a local gardening show mentioned some? chemical that could be applied to the ground around rose bushes that will retard the fungus that causes black spot.? We went to a local greenhouse and picked up some Lime Sulfur and will "water" the ground in an attempt to beat that back.? We had a relatively dry spring and summer, but had black spot like crazy.? I think it’s because two winters ago we had to rush to cover our roses before an unexpected snow arrived.? We spent a couple of hours in a cold rain pruning and covering.? The next morning, we woke up to six inches of snow.? Unfortunately, the ground around the roses wasn’t as clean as we would have wanted, and I think that led to some of the problems we’ve had in the two years since.? I think that this weekend will be decent enough to finish things up and get ready to snuggle in for the winter.
