Alpacas and tomatoes

As I twittered yesterday, Dennis & I went out and about on a couple of errands yesterday. We went back to the farmer who we had bought those tremendous tomato plants last year. You know the ones, they grew about 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide and gave us tomatoes well past the first frost. You remember:

So we picked up some new plants and then took the scenic route home. We went through Vermillion, Ohio and lo and behold, right there in downtown, an alpaca shop! Who knew? We went in and came out with – alpaca. No, not the animal, just some roving. AND, it was 20% off my entire order.

Tried spinning it last night. It went okay. I did some internet research, and as always, came up with inconsistent information. Spin fast, spin slow, overtwist, not too much twist. Sigh. I’ll just have to play with it and see.

When Dogs Fly

Did some work on the kitchen this weekend (I’ll post about that later), but the fun part of Sunday was going to a local Ultimate Air Dogs event.

Here are a few photos of the amazing canines.

Dennis and I talked about how great the dogs were and how much we thought Maverick could do that. And then we remembered this:

Maverick – Beating the heat

Maverick is the first long haired dog Dennis has owned.

He is constantly amazed at the amount of hair Mav can lose and not look like a Chinese Crested.

I think there’s a little jealousy there. But, I’m not saying anything. I had an American Eskimo several years ago, so I well remember the tumbling hair tumbleweeds during the big shedding season.

It’s hot here again today. And muggy. Poor Mav is so hot, his day has consisted of 1) panting and 2) lying around looking sad and pathetic.

Here are Maverick’s top ways to beat the heat:

Get Dad to fill the baby pool.
Eat ice cream.
Open up the fridge to feel the cool.
Eat tasty morsels out the fridge while you’re cooling down.
Drink plenty of water.
Look pitiful so Mom gives breaks out the Beggin’ Strips.
Lay on the sofa in front of the fan.
Ask for more ice cream….

Help The Puppies

We are involved with an animal rescue here in our area. It is run by a woman with whom I work. Late last week, a Springer Spaniel puppy was brought in to a local vet with Parvo. The doofus that brought the puppy in could not afford treatment (which can run into the hundreds/thousands of dollars per puppy). He was just out the breed purebred Springers and make a quick buck. He never bothered to get the puppies vaccinated. The woman who runs the rescue said he would have to surrender all the dogs for her to help with the treatment. He (reluctantly) agreed and now eight of the nine puppies are on IV treatment.

Parvo is a real killer and extremely painful. Treatment isn’t that pleasant either. Worse still, it’s important to keep the dogs quiet and still while in treatment. Ever tried to keep a puppy quiet and still? Good luck.

Anyway, there is a fund raising drive going on to help with some of the cost of treatment.

Tinker – Rest In Peace

On Thursday, January 19, 2006, we gave our beloved dog, Tinker, back to God. She fought the cancerous tumor on her hip valiantly. Suddenly, Wednesday evening, she was unable to use her back legs. Her breathing was beginning to sound rough. It appeared to be more confusing than painful for her, but we knew that would come soon.

Although the decision was simple, it was the hardest choice. We took Tinker to the vet Thursday morning and, surrounded by people who loved her, her favorite blanket and stuffed bunny, this magnificent animal left for the next journey. We miss her – and always will. She was a loyal, loving companion. We know she is still here with us in spirit.

Our dog, Tinker, recently had a cancer scare – well, she wasn’t scared, but we were. She had surgery to remove a tumor on her hip about a month ago. The vet wasn’t too encouraging prior to the surgery, but the alternatives were even more discouraging. The tumor was infiltrating the muscle, but the vet felt that he had gotten everything. That same day, the little dickens was trying to walk up the stairs (she hates being where we’re not) and 2 days later, she was running the yard, against our wishes. She’s more active than ever, and we are thankful.
