I was outside today doing some Fall garden clean up and I was given some surprises.

This is a little orphan rose bush that I rescued from the neighbor several years ago. It usually only blooms once in the spring.

On Spring and Dogs and Frogs

It was 81 degrees here yesterday. 81! The yard got its’ first hair cut of the season this week and some of the roses have broken dormancy. It’s supposed to be really nice here this weekend. Much lawn work will ensure. The sweet music of dogs barking at squirrels will begin.

Apparently some frogs have decided that our teeny, tiny pond is a hotel. They were singing (loudly) late into the night.

Spring took a long time to get here. But it arrived. And summer came pretty quickly afterward. It’s been a miserable, hot, humid, sticky, sweaty existence the last few days and today will be no different.

The garden, however, seems to love it.

Recovering Nicely, Thank You!

One of the things we worked on last night was the back yard side of the storm damage.

One of our rose bushes, a climber and English rose called Teasing Georgia, was half smooshed when the tree fell and the privacy fence buckled. As you look toward it, the entire right half was basically laying on the ground. By the time I got to it last weekend, some canes had actually sprouted new growth that was growing up toward the sun. I put two trellises against the privacy fence and

with an abundance of caution, untangled the spaghetti nest of canes. It took a good long time to cut the dead and damaged from the viable and then tie those canes to the trellis with garden wire, but it did look better afterward.

Note: This is a two year old bush which was probably 12 – 18 inches tall when it was planted. It’s now approaching six feet. What’s it going to be in 5 years? Yikes, I need a bigger trellis.

The yard is coming alive with color and I hope to start having my first cup of coffee while snapping photos of the roses in bloom very soon.

The Roses Are Going to Sleep

Northern Ohio has dipped below freezing three times (maybe four) in the last week. We’ve also had spitting snow a couple of days. Winter is coming. Today, Dennis is raking up leaves, moving some of the plants inside, and we’ll start coning roses – probably next weekend.

It’s past mid-November, and it’s time, but for the past several years, I’m always suprised when winter rolls around.
