The roof – revisited

The roof guys have been here for three days. Originally, it was estimated that the “repair” would take a day or day and a half. When the roof foreman (Rob) got here, Dennis showed him the list of things to do (per the inspector), as well as about a dozen photos we had taken during the dispute process.

Rob studied the photos for a long time. Then he said to Dennnis, “why did they do this?”, “why did they do that?” With each question, Dennis just said, “I have no idea, that’s why you’re here”.

They’re heeeeee-rrrrrrrr-eeeeee

The roofers finally showed up to redo the crappy job they started in July.

This is a new crew; thankfully, the old crew was not sent back and there is much speculation around here (okay, you know, just between Dennis & me) about whether the old crew is still employed.  After all, this new crew will have to be paid, the gutter guy may need to come out again, new materials had to be provided for two sides of the roof as well as the front porch, the company’s owner offered to pay for the inspection that we had done after the first go around (we told him we’d pay half), etc., etc.  So the profit margin on this job has to be next to nothing at this point.

The foreman on this crew seemed, well, surprised at some of the things we told him and showed him this morning.

Keep your fingers crossed.

And maybe your toes too!

Another roof related post…again

Well, we got the bill for the first installment on the roof a couple of days ago. Yikes! I believe we will be developing a taste for pork & beans and Spaghetti-Os. And to make it extra-special, the roof isn’t even finished yet.

The inspector had advised us to get the chimney tuck-pointed before the tear-off of the two crappy sides of the roof. The chimney sweep came out last Monday.

The Roof: the inspection…

We’ve had few days without having to deal with roof issues.

It’s been bliss. The whole thing really has zapped the strength out of us and little else has gotten done. On the plus side, I have learned more than I ever wanted to know about shingling. On the minus side, I’ve learned more than I ever wanted about shingling. As an additional obsessive bonus, Dennis and I spend our time in the car examining other people’s roofs.

“Oh look, they have the metal valleys on their house.”

“Hey, look at the nail pops on their roof.”

“Gee, they really have inconsistent exposures there.”

If there are roses blooming or road construction or dinosaurs roaming the streets, we don’t notice. But we can tell you who’s roof has waves and dips and rotting fascia.

C’mon! Get to the point of the post, already!

Roof…update…again…it’s not getting any better

I am not a mean, vengeful, spiteful person, but I swear, if the company we hired does not correct their crappy roofing job soon, I will contact every consumer group and home builder’s association I can find about them.

By the way, I now more about roofing than any homeowner should.  No, really, ask me about drip edge and nail lines and exposures and underlayment and ice guard and how many nails you need for what wind speed.  Go right ahead, I know it….
